Casino: Debate is OK, blacklisting is not

There's no getting around it; the casino debate has been divisive and contentious for the community. The Daily Independent (like the RACVB) is taking a position of support for the casino project, largely because no one else is offering a legal way for the city to make as much as million in 20 years.

The Daily Independent is, however, committed to accurate and fair coverage. And in the interest of fair journalism we have attempted to cover both sides of the casino issue. We have gamely covered the pro-casino contingent and the anti-casino folks as both sides spoke passionately during council meetings and sent stacks of letters to the Department of the Interior. We have covered Mike Neel's (thus far) unsuccessful attempt to get an injunction preventing the city from talking to the tribe. If the other side takes legal action of some sort we will cover that too.

And these are all tried and true American tactics, using public meetings, governmental offices and the legal system in the way they were intended to be used.

Where we draw the line is at the suggestion of business boycotts. Neel wrote, then rescinded a letter to the DI suggesting a boycott of businesses belonging the Ridgecrest Chamber of Commerce and the Indian Wells Valley Economic Development Corporation because the Timbisha Shoshone tribe is also a member. The DI is glad that Neel changed his mind about making such an extreme suggestion, but troubled that he brought it up in the first place.

Boycotting businesses for holding a particular point of view on a local issue brings up unsavory memories of McCarthyism (the Joseph kind), only worse. The Daily Independent thought the US learned better than this back in the 1950s. Also deeply troubling is the none-too-subtle taint of racism that runs through all this. When the Timbisha Tribe wants to open a business in town, they are accused of being self-serving. When they say they have no plans to steal water or sell weed but want to be good neighbors they are accused of lying. When they put their money where their mouths are and join local organizations – like good neighbors do – the other members of those organizations may now face a threat to their own livelihoods.

It is very, very hard to make sense of any of this without perceiving a strong racist bias coming from the anti-casino crowd. This is reprehensible behavior that has no part in a civilized city.

We are glad Neel appears to be dropping his call for a boycott--at least in our paper. We hope everyone follows suit and disavows this ugly, racist uncalled-for tactic. Please everyone, fight fair and leave the bullying, blacklisting, boycotting tactics in the past where they belong.
